Q.4 MOJO: REPRESENTATION

Before continuing our print productions, we revise some exam short questions on PEGI and PSB broadcasting. You are all doing a great job on your music magazine design and layout!

We also revise the 5 mark question on deconstructing the MOJO music magazine cover as this will be set for tonight's prep. In the exam, you would write about 2/3 of a page to get your 5 marks.

On Tuesday next, we go through this exam question in class to check that you have understood it, so make sure that you have posted your prep on your blog.

PRINT BRIEF 1: MAKE A MUSIC MAGAZINE COVER / DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

We identify the genre codes and conventions for music magazine layouts:
  • masthead / title size and position
  • main splash as CVI - centre of visual interest, often obscuring title
  • often close-up
  • cover lines - other stories within
  • layout - cover lines usually justified to the left or right, space around main splash
  • font - usually three colours, one accent colour
  • puffs to attract attention - exclusive content, freebies, new!
  • bar code, date, price

You then create a test piece (using found images, rather then original images as you would have to do for your actual production).
PREP Develop your production but do not feel under pressure to complete a finished piece.

BRIEFS

Introduction to 2019 Briefs:

We start by looking at the soap opera genre and identifying genre codes and conventions in class.
We discuss what we already know about soaps and identify how they relate to audiences, how they introduce characters, what their narrative structure is like, how narrative strands work, how drama and comedy may be used and how they use title sequences.
PREP Investigate a soap opera for 14 -18s of your choice, such as
BYKER GROVE, here
GRANGE HILL, here
or TRACY BEAKER here
Take 4 screenshots that show genre conventions and label each one, as below.
The establishing shot shows the Yorkshire Dales (where the soap is set) and the title of the soap anchors the meaning (Emmerdale).

Soaps are usually realistic with realistic mise-en-scene and lighting (like this ordinary, messy kitchen).

Characters are usually easy for the target audience to relate to, such as these teenagers who would provide 'relatable' characters for teenage viewers. Some stereotypes are used, such as 'the rebel', 'the bully'

The title sequence is always the same and cues the waiting audience with its easily recognisable theme tune.

There is often conflict in the narrative to make it dramatic (as well as humour, which is not shown here)

10 D: 01 TV: PSB Q.4

PREP Get to know more about what the BBC offer in terms of Public Service Broadcasting by exploring (for example) BBC iPlayer. You are looking for evidence of the requirements listed in the table below (bottom left). No need to write anything down.

ANSWER TO EXAM QUESTION 4:

Responses should use the BBC as an example to illustrate PSB.
Responses may state that the BBC has expectations above those of commercial Public Service Broadcasting due to its funding by the licence fee. We look at selected BBC and other texts to get to grips with terms and feel confident about understanding the points below in a wider context.
