In class today, we revised the term MEDIA LANGUAGE in relation to music magazines.
The term refers to the visual language and the genre conventions of music magazines (not just all magazines, but music magazines in particular). Media language does not mean 'what the writing is about' but many pupils get confused and loose marks in this way.

We identified the following features in music magazines:
  • how the overall look delivered particular genres, such as reggae, alt rock, rap, pop
  • how fonts create different meanings
  • how different images create meanings, including the positioning of the artists
  • the use of colours
  • the layout and how streamlined / orderly / formal or busy / cluttered it is: use of columns, free style, grouping of text
  • additional features, such as visual noise
  • for covers, it would include how mastheads, straplines, taglines, coverlines and puffs functioned
