Yr 11 CLASSWORK

You have all done your coursework (called Non Examined Assessment now) and you have done a full exam last summer as well as a full mock for me. So I have a lot of evidence of your attainments.

However, Mr Hitchcock tells us we do not know exactly what additional evidence the exam boards may ask us to provide so we are to keep working!

In that light, please would you now do the work that has been set on the class blog for the year 10s this last week. It has been on Warner and Lego.

Post it on your blog. There it will be in case the exam board ask for more evidence. I will supply your blog urls.

Please also go through your News Website and check that it all works perfectly:

  • that no links are broken or fail to open
  • that no video is over 45 seconds
  • that all news articles (even on the linked pages) have a standfirst
  • spelling and punctuation is perfect
  • check if I have emailed you!

I do hope that you are all well? I am working harder than ever marking coursework for other year groups. So I am usually to be found on my laptop, if you need me.

There will be more classwork and GoogleMeet lessons next term which resumes on Tuesday 21 March. Our GoogleMeet will be on Tuesday afternoons.

Yr 10 LESSON TODAY: PROMOTING MEDIA

We will do 3 lessons a week, each of 50 minutes plus prep, on TUESDAYS, WEDNESDAYS and FRIDAYS (I have split up Tuesday's double).

During the period when we deliver online lessons and set prep using the blog, you will need your text book. Matt, you have been asked to replace the text book which you think that you have lost at home:
OCR GCSE (9-1) MEDIA STUDIES by A. French, E. Lewis, R. Morrison, M.Rodgers
pub. Hodder Education

This part of the exam is the Warner Bros and Lego part!
Read carefully and slowly through pages 43 - 44 to remind yourself what kinds of knowledge and understanding you need to have.

From page 43:
  • Look at terms like media language: if you were asked in the exam, would you really know what this was and not fall into the elephant trap?
  • what is representation? Think about how Emmet and Wyldstyle are represented, for instance
  • media 'audiences' questions will relate to audience pleasures and audience engagement, how Warner attracts and addresses them
  • media industry issues include how the promo pack works together across several sectors
Read about question 6 page 43 to end of 44
  • revise regulators and regulatory information
Now test yourself
  • Use the green test at the top of page 45
  • revise the terms distribution and conglomerate on page 45
Next, read about what question 7 might involve (on page 45) and what the examiner is looking for. Turn over to page 46 and read the candidate's answer to question 7.

Now onto media industries and the background to the Lego Movie franchise:
  • page 46 the franchise and tent-pole productions
  • page 47 go online to find examples of Lego movie merchandising
  • page 47 synergy and what it does for Warner and the Lego movie
  • test yourself on the 2 questions in the blue box on page 47 (then look at the answers on page 135)
PREP Regulation in the film industry (bottom of page 47 to middle of page 48)
Read and test yourself. Answers on page 135.

Yr 11 02 NEWS

02 NEWS
Social / cultural and historical contexts of the 1960s. As for our TV drama text of the same era, The Avengers, we need to understand how social, cultural and historical contexts have influenced our texts.
PREP Open the edition of the Observer and carefully read it to ensure that you understand the stories behind the headlines, images and advertisements. Use the internet to investigate. We have already used Netflix's The Crown to explore the Aberfan story.
You should also use your class TEXT BOOK starting at page123 to 127 'How the three set historical Observer from pages from the 1960s reflect their contexts'.
Here is the link on the class blog.
This is the top of the page:

Yr 10 MUSIC MAGAZINE

In your exam 02 MUSIC & NEWS, we are given two images: one is the front cover of an edition of MOJO (we don't know which until the exam) and the second is another music magazine cover.

Questions will focus on representation (= who is represented in the images and cover lines) and media language (= what are the elements that make this cover a music magazine, such as the layout).

Therefore, you need to practise analysing music magazine covers.

PREP Select ONE hiphop music magazine cover of your choice.
Paste into your blog for Prep.
Analyse the representation and media language of the cover. Below are the features of most music magazines to help you. Here is an example of a high quality response and here is another.
