In class today, we revised the term MEDIA LANGUAGE in relation to music magazines.
The term refers to the visual language and the genre conventions of music magazines (not just all magazines, but music magazines in particular). Media language does not mean 'what the writing is about' but many pupils get confused and loose marks in this way.
We identified the following features in music magazines:
- how the overall look delivered particular genres, such as reggae, alt rock, rap, pop
- how fonts create different meanings
- how different images create meanings, including the positioning of the artists
- the use of colours
- the layout and how streamlined / orderly / formal or busy / cluttered it is: use of columns, free style, grouping of text
- additional features, such as visual noise
- for covers, it would include how mastheads, straplines, taglines, coverlines and puffs functioned

We study representations of PC Prager (foreground below) and PC Lino (background) to provide
parts of the answer:
- the inclusion of PC Prager illustrates the programme's inclusion of strong women represents a time in which female policing is becoming the norm. The ensemble cast is attempting to give equal status to both men and women to reflect the values and culture of the UK in the 2010s. PC Prager is shown as tougher and stronger than her police partner Lino. PC Lino Moretti is an out-of-shape cop who is proud of his Italian heritage. He is Donna's partner.
- there is a brief interview with actress playing the role here
- In what scenes / ways does she come across as tough, decisive and capable?
- changing attitudes to masculinity can be seen in the sensitive side to Ryan Draper and through the weaker character of Lino. In certain scenes, both characters are given the opportunity to show a less harsh side to their characters through the way they interact with the public and their fellow officers.
- In what scenes are they represented in this way?
