Q.2 CUFFS

Today, we practise another possible version of q.2 on CUFFS (link to cast list of episode 1):

Analyse how far family relationships are depicted sympathetically.
·      Analyse aspects of family relationships
·      Judge how far these aspects depict the families sympathetically

Worth 10 marks. Write 1 ½ sides.

We decided to discuss Jake, his mother and father (proud parents at police ceremony scene; cosy domestic supper home scene). We contrasted this with DS Jo Moffat's solitary, lonely microwave supper, after Chief Sup. Vickers turns her down; we felt sorry for her. We noted that for Jake, being the son of the boss gave him privileges but made him the target of suspicion; we sympathise with his position when Ryan has a dig at him.

We discussed the divorced father who kidnaps his small daughter; we sympathised with his despair but condemned his actions, especially when he attempts suicide in front of her. We witness the mother being upset and empathise with her worry.

The young Asian boy who is seriously wounded in a racial attack is depicted as a loving son on the phone to his family as he enters the shop. Jo tells the shopkeeper how distraught his parents and family are as he fights for his life. We sympathise with them as innocent victims.

The Asian shopkeeper Mohammad Bangash who refuses to let Jo question his young son, the only witness to the attack, may seem to deserve our criticism until he explains his unco-operative attitude. His family has been badly racially abused on several occasions and have received no protection from the police. We have to take into account that his small son may be vulnerable to retaliation form the racist thugs if he gives testimony against them. This realisation tempers our judgement of his lack of sympathy for the Asian student's plight.
