Year 10 BROADSHEET NEWSPAPERS

We look at today's issues of The Times, The Telegraph and The Observer Guardian today to identify what distinguishes the 'quality' press.

• These broadsheets generally value hard news, such as political news. 
• They value an international outlook, covering foreign affairs.
• They tackle 'difficult' issues, even if they are uncomfortable.
• They serve a broad audience by including sport, culture, the arts, with many feature articles
• Online versions offer interactivity, with podcasts, comments invited, readers' letters

PREP Find any broadsheet newspaper (it does not have to be today's) either the print version or the online version. 
Post a picture / screenshot and 5 bullet points about what you have noticed about it. 
These could be about 

• how it is funded (paid for, accessed by audiences) State how you can tell.
• the kind of news that it offers: hard news or sensationalism? Give examples
• interest in internationalism: does it seem to value other cultures and people? Examples?
• balance of features: does it seem to value culture as well as politics and hard news?
•  or its 'look' : media language means its layout, colour palette, choice of fonts (serif or sans serif?), ratio of copy to pictures.
• its political leanings (if you can discern them)
