Media language of television is tested in 01 TELEVISION & PROMOTING MEDIA.
You will view an extract from either Cuffs or The Avengers and be asked a 5 mark question.
It could be on sound, mise-en-scene, camerawork or editing. Below is the first practice paper's question on sound which we will cover in class.
Use TEA
Identify the terminology
Give the example
Analysis of how meaning is made
For instance: The arrest of the self-important, aggressive bohemian woman includes diegetic sound in the form of dialogue terminology. She haughtily talks about her powerful lawyer mother in an attempt to intimidate the arresting officer example. This constructs her in a negative way as an unlikeable character who has abused justice and thinks that she is above the law.Analysis
A second example of dialogue is also very pointed terminology: when PC Ryan retorts that the officers at the Station do not care who people's parents are, he is making a point to both the woman and to PC Jake example. He is putting down Jake whose father, Superintendent Vickers, pulled rank to get Jake his promotion. The meaning is not lost on Jake's colleagues who smirk at his humiliation while Jake looks embarrassed. The audience might have sympathy for Jake in this public but covert put down, or they may feel that he deserves it. Analysis
Second example. We also worked through the example in which Jo is called in by Superintendent Vickers. We analyse both the dialogue and also how it is said, such as her hesitation and struggling to find the right words, how her body language is at odds with her actual words.
PREP Copy /paste this question into your prep post then answer it. Your extract starts at the raid outside Benson's house and finishes outside in the yard when Jake has saved Ryan's life. The image below shows the start point on ClickView.
Question 1 (5 marks): Analyse how mise-en-scene is used in the extract to create meaning. Refer to at least two examples from the extract in your answer.
(Hint: mise-en-scene can include setting, vehicles, animals, casting, clothes & props, lighting. Mise-en-scene refers to everything that is on set.)
